Some dog breeds such as Dalmatians, Bulldogs, and Yorkshire Terriers are genetically prone to urate or cystine bladder stones because of difficulties breaking down purines found in dog foods or an accumulation of an amino acid called cysteine in the urine. Moderate levels of high-quality proteins, methionine, and cysteine help reduce the risk of cystine stones from forming. Low-purine proteins may help prevent urate stones. And enhanced levels of EPA and DHA linoleic acid, zinc, and biotin promote a healthy skin and shiny coat. Lower urinary tract issues may be a recurring concern for some dogs.
